I've never had full on sleep paralysis, but I do have a recurring "unseen evil force" dream, wherein the evil force has enough hold over me that I can't scream.
Well, you're almost always paralyzed during REM sleep (when most dreams you remember occur) so you don't hurt yourself by acting out your dreams. Comedian Mike Birbiglia has a good stand-up routine about this.
My one teenage bout of sleep paralysis involved Elvis in a white jumpsuit.

Difficulty moving during a dream (which happens to me sometimes) may be at some level a recognition of this.
